Time plays a vital role in Ryan Sullivan’s practice. His paintings are made with pigmented resin using a sculptural casting process which yields a flat, uncannily optical surface. These fast, experimental paintings evoke the legacy of abstract expressionism. Sullivan works flat, parallel to the floor—just as Jackson Pollock situated his large canvases—and is inspired by the potential for improvisation, which chimes with Pollock.

At the heart of Sullivan’s practice is a willingness to surrender control. Speaking with Paul Hobson, director of Modern Art, Oxford, earlier this year, he explains: “My brain lends itself to creating an overarching system, where a world can emerge.”

Raised in Boston, Sullivan currently lives and works in New York City. His work is included in major public collections, including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Forthcoming projects include a new monograph surveying Sullivan’s resin paintings, published by Sadie Coles HQ and Apogee Graphics.
