We are excited to present an Artist Conversation between Barbara Kasten and fellow artist Irena Haiduk (b. Belgrade, 1982, lives and works in New York) on December 10 at 4:00 p.m. in conjunction with this exhibition. In this live Zoom conversation, Kasten and Haiduk will discuss the role of the studio in their work, and the vital distinction between taking pictures and making images. Multiple facets of Kasten’s prolific career add dimensions to Haiduk’s understanding of the camera as a public place where everything lives and acts.
Since 2016, Haiduk has overseen each aspect of the project Yugoexport, an “oral corporation” whose founding logic is to establish parity between people (sentient beings) and things (inanimate objects). Yugoexport’s maxim “How to surround yourself with things in the right way” is the core principle behind the production of images, books, and apparel, as well as orations, films and video works, scenographies, and variable spaces. Her work has been featured at the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, the 14th Istanbul Biennial (both 2015), Whitney Biennial and documenta 14 (2017), and at New York’s Swiss Institute (2020). The second anthology of Haiduk’s writings, Studio Feelings, is forthcoming.
