Critic Evan Moffitt will be in conversation with artist Jill Magid to discuss her film The Proposal (2018, 87 minutes).

“What happens to an artist’s legacy when it is owned by a corporation?” asks Jill Magid at the beginning of The Proposal. Her daring film documents her attempt to liberate the archive of renowned Mexican architect Luis Barragán from a Swiss bunker by offering its owner an unsettling gift in exchange: a diamond ring formed from Barragán’s ashes. A controversial work of conceptual art and a deeply incisive investigation into power and property, The Proposal explores how far an artist is willing to go to democratize access to art. Following the screening, Magid and critic Evan Moffitt will discuss the film and how to navigate questions of access and ownership in an art market that is increasingly globalized.

Evan Moffitt is a writer, editor, and critic based in New York. His writing appears often in frieze, where he was formerly Senior Editor, and has been featured in various other publications, including Aperture, Apollo, Art in America, Art Review, BOMB, The Brooklyn Rail, Flash Art, PIN-UP, Transition Magazine, The White Review, and Los Angeles Review of Books. He has co-authored books on several artists, including Hélio Oiticica, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, and Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin De Burca, and is currently developing a podcast about the travel lives of artworks.

Jill Magid is an American artist, writer, and filmmaker. Solo exhibitions include Dia Bridgehampton; The Renaissance Society, Chicago; Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; San Francisco Art Institute; Tate Modern, London; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Berkeley Museum of Art, California; Tate Liverpool; and the Security and Intelligence Agency of the Netherlands. Her first feature-length film The Proposal (2018), commissioned by Field of Vision and distributed in the U.S. by Oscilloscope Laboratories, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and received numerous prestigious festival awards. Her work is included the collections of the Centre Pompidou, Whitney Museum of American Art, Fundacion Jumex, and the Walker Art Center, among others. Magid is the recipient of a 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship, a 2020 Creative Time Artist Commission, and the 2017 Calder Prize.
