Join Filmmaker and curator Rabz Lansiquot for a study session exploring Black liberatory film. The Black Film Anti-School is Lansiquot’s ongoing project, initiated at London’s LUX Moving Image in 2019, which seeks to create spaces for collective learning, including screenings, reading and discussion, and generate discourse that goes beyond conversations about representation and towards a liberatory mode of making, viewing and critiquing Black film. This session will explore theories of Aesthetics through the work of thinkers like Clyde Taylor and Teshome Gabriel.

Bios:

Imani Mason Jordan (FKA Robinson) is an interdisciplinary writer, artist, editor and facilitator. Their research-led practice combines Live Art and performance, oration, collaboration, poetry and critical theory, exploring themes of black geographies, the afterlives of transatlantic slavery, abolition, radical resistance and the politics of safety. Imani has an MA in Forensic Architecture from CRA, Goldsmiths, University of London and a BA in International Relations and Anthropology from the University of Sussex. They are the author of the pamphlet Objects Who Testify, published by PSS in 2019, as well as of various essays and creative texts online and in print. Their recent performances include ATLANTIC RAILTON: LIVE with Ain Bailey at Serpentine Pavilion (2021) and WELCOME NOTE (Quantum Ghost) with Libita Sibungu (various iterations, 2018-2021).

Rabz Lansiquot is a filmmaker, programmer, curator, and DJ. They were a leading member of sorryyoufeeluncomfortable collective from its inception in 2014, and now work alongside Imani Robinson as Languid Hands, who were the Cubitt Curatorial Fellows for 2020-22. Rabz was Curator-In-Residence at LUX Moving Image in 2019, developing a public and educational program around Black liberatory cinema. Their first solo exhibition where did we land, an experimental visual essay exploring the use of images of anti-black violence in film and media, was on view at LUX in Summer 2019. They have curated film programs at the ICA, SQIFF and Berwick Film & Media Festival, were a program advisor for London Film Festival’s Experimenta strand in 2019, and a programmer for Sheffield Doc Fest for its 2021 edition.

Languid Hands is a London-based artistic and curatorial collaboration between DJ, filmmaker and curator Rabz Lansiquot and interdisciplinary writer and artist Imani Mason Jordan (fka Imani Robinson). Their practice explores collaboration, curation, black study and experimentation across exhibitions, moving image, text, performance, publications and public programming, alongside peer-led artists development and residencies. In 2021, Languid Hands curated the LIVE program for Frieze London and they are currently curatorial fellows at London’s Cubitt Artists, delivering their program, No Real Closure.
