Eddie Rodolfo Aparicio’s practice addresses colonial and ecological concerns through material and formal means. Primarily using raw materials that have a strong connection to pre-Hispanic cultures in Central America, such as amber and rubber, Aparicio engages with the complex histories and contemporary concerns of the Latinx community in his native Los Angeles, the wider United States, and abroad.

Joined by Suzanne Hudson, Associate Professor of Art History and Fine Arts at USC, the artist will discuss his recent work, including his rubber works in the Caucho series, and its intersection with issues of environmental justice embodied practice, and place-making.

Biography

Eddie Rodolfo Aparicio (b. 1990, Los Angeles, CA; lives and works in Los Angeles) received a BA in Studio Art from Bard College in 2012, an MFA from Yale University in 2016, and attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2016. Recent solo exhibitions have been held at Los Angeles State Historic Park, Clockshop, CA (2021); Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles (2020); Páramo, Guadalajara, Mexico (2019); The Mistake Room, Los Angeles (2018); and Green Gallery, New Haven, CT (2016). Aparicio has participated in group exhibitions at Denver Art Museum, CO (2022); Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York (2022); Hauser & Wirth, New York (2022); American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York (2022); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2021); El Museo del Barrio, New York (2021); Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR (2020); Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, CA (2019); Anonymous Gallery, Mexico City (2018); Smack Mellon, Brooklyn (2017); and Abrons Art Center, New York (2016). He is the recipient of the California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists (2018); Schell Center for Human Rights Fellowship, Yale University (2015); National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, VCCA (2014); and Sol LeWitt and Elizabeth Murray Studio Arts Award, Bard College (2012).

Suzanne Hudson is an art historian and critic based in Los Angeles, where she is Associate Professor of Art History and Fine Arts at USC., She is a long-time contributor to Artforum and numerous international publications, and the author of books including Agnes Martin: Night Sea (Afterall/MIT, 2017) and Contemporary Painting (Thames & Hudson, World of Art, 2021).
