Mungo Thomson: Levitating Mass

Jul 4, 2012-Sep 3, 2012
The AAM’s 2012 Fourth of July celebration project was by Los Angeles–based artist Mungo Thomson, known for his humorous, conceptually driven work. Thomson’s project for the AAM referenced Michael Heizer’s monumental work Levitated Mass (2012)—which invites viewers to stroll beneath a 340-ton granite stone—by making the stone float as an inflatable replica. The artist created a float approximately half the size of Heizer’s rock. Thomson’s float was featured in Aspen’s Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Parade on Main Street, and then was anchored at the AAM Future Home site in Aspen’s downtown core.
Mungo Thomson’s Fourth of July project was organized by the Aspen Art Museum with support from Alison and Mark Pincus.
