Phil Collins
Clara, I envy you, 2009
Edition of 8
Phil Collins, an English artist and Turner Prize nominee, was commissioned in 2008 by the Aspen Art Museum as part of the Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residency Program. In Soy Mi Madre, Collins expanded on themes of ethnicity, gender, and political and linguistic identity by using the format of the telenovela. In this photographic work, Collins focuses on the Latino and immigrant populations of Colorado. In Aspen itself, this community figures mainly as a nonresident, low-qualified work force. At the same time, he alludes to and refutes the preconceived glamorous image of Aspen.
