In this three-part course, participants will unpack the contentious questions of authenticity, appropriation, and authority in contemporary art through various case studies and critical approaches. This course builds a skill set of observational tools, conceptual vocabulary, and a greater confidence in navigating contemporary art. Each session is led by a different guest speaker who presents an interactive, thematic lecture.
• May 2: “Authorship” with Michelle Dezember, AAM Learning Director
• May 9: “Authenticity” with Heidi Zuckerman, AAM Nancy and Bob Magoon CEO and Director
• May 16: “Appropriation” with Erich Hatala Matthes, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Wellesley College
This session’s topic is: “Authorship”
Who has the right to speak? Is anything original? This introductory session will lay the groundwork for the course, as well as investigate the responsibility of ownership in art-making and appreciation.
