In this three-part course, participants will unpack the contentious questions of authenticity, appropriation, and authority in contemporary art through various case studies and critical approaches. This course builds a skill set of observational tools, conceptual vocabulary, and a greater confidence in navigating contemporary art. Each session is led by a different guest speaker who presents an interactive, thematic lecture.

• May 9: “Authenticity” with Heidi Zuckerman, AAM Nancy and Bob Magoon CEO and Director
• May 16: “Appropriation” with Erich Hatala Matthes, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Wellesley College

What does integrity look like? This session explores the complex notion of authenticity, taking a personal and art historical look at stories of success (and failure) in art created with (and without) a clear intention.
