Active Art invites seniors to engage in the social dimensions of art. Each month, museum Educators bring free, memory-enhancing activities to the assisted-living communities of Whitcomb Terrace in Aspen and Heritage Park in Carbondale, and also host art making on the museum’s Roof Deck Sculpture Garden with complimentary refreshments.
Free, drop-in spotlight tours led by museum staff are offered every Wednesday and Saturday at 1 p.m.
Monthly drop-in Family Workshops at the AAM are designed to provide children and adults free opportunities to explore the galleries and create works of art on their own. Families are encouraged to communicate, reflect, and produce as artists together.
All Family Workshops are free of charge and are first come, first served for families with children ages 3–10. Workshops begin in the Education Workshop, giving families choices for self-guided or Educator-led activities and art-making stations.

Let’s explore the play between color and sunlight! Taking inspiration from contemporary artist Larry Bell, students will create a bright array of mixed-media artworks using translucent materials such as water, vellum, and cellophane, illuminating every color of the rainbow.
Shape your future in this two-week pottery workshop designed for young clay artists interested in learning hand-building skills and making friendships that will last a lifetime. We’ll work individually and collaboratively to imagine and create a personal set of functional and decorative pieces. We’ll show off our wares to family and friends at a zany Mad Potters party at the end of the session.

Make your directorial debut in this workshop designed for artists with a deep passion for storytelling. Hone your unique vision through storyboarding, character creation, and set design. Bring everything to life using a variety of animation techniques that will be shared in a special screening for family and friends at the end of the week.
Make-believe in this drawing and painting workshop where young artists will magically transform into the bugs and birds that live by the shores of Hallam Lake. After discovering the natural world through these new perspectives (and costumes), artists will respond by creating new artworks in all shapes, colors, and sizes.
